Diabetic Ketoacidosis SymptomsKetoacidosis symptoms are exhibited by people that have diabetic ketoacidosis. Ketoacidois occurs mostly in people with type 1 diabetes because they have no insulin in their bodies to fall back on except what they inject as their own medication.

Type 2 diabetes or other types of diabetics rarely get Ketoacidosis symptoms as they have some insulin in their bodies.  People with type 2 get something similar to Ketoacidois symptoms mainly when they have severe infections or traumas that put their bodies under enormous physical stress.

Ketoacidosis symptoms occurs when your body tends to produce very high levels of ketones also known as blood acids. Generally, both males and females can be affected by ketoacidosis and it is therefore not limited to any gender. The following information explains ketoacidosis’s symptoms.

Identifying Ketoacidosis Symptoms:

  • Weakness – you become weak as your muscle tissue is unable to get it’s fuel – glucose
  • Nausea and vomiting: You are experiencing these symptoms as you have build up of acids and the loss of important bodily substances
  • Rapid deep breathing: This fast or rapid breathing is due to the blood is very acidic that your body tries to blow off through the lungs.  At this stage your breath has a very smell about it.
  • Extreme tiredness and drowsiness: This happens as you are tired as your brain is bathed in thickened blood like syrup as it is missing essential substances lost through urination

In very simple terms, ketoacidosis is a condition that occurs when there is an interruption of your insulin treatment or have an infection.  Your body is a magnificent machine and it can go for many hours without insulin activity before it starts to burn fat for energy and starts to make extra glucose that it is unable to use.  Next the process of burning fat creates ketones in your blood, which in turn is responsible for your ketoacidosis symptoms.

Ketoacidosis is a serious condition that requires immediate professional treatment.  Even though you should leave the treatment to your doctor instead of trying to manage this yourself it is still vital for you to know and understand what is happening to either yourself or family member.

The whole basis of ketoacidosis treatment is to bring the amount of water back into your body, stop the acid condition by getting rid of the ketones, restoring potassium that has been lost and return your blood glucose levels to it’s normal state.  All of these improvements should start to kick in once treatment has begun.

To get this treatment underway your doctor will set up a flow chart to monitor and track your levels of glucose, acid, potassium and ketones.  As your treatment progresses your doctor will monitor you closely and make changes to your treatment along the way if necessary.  As your lack of insulin gave you  ketoacidosis symptoms, your doctor will give you insulin intravenously to restore your insulin levels and reverse any abnormalities in your body.

When you have received your insulin infusion your body will stop breaking down fat for energy and your body will after a period of time start to return to it’s normal condition.  With the replenishment of fluids you will start to have the nausea settle down and will now be able to keep both liquids and solids down again.  This is a good sign as you will then be able to take over the administering your insulin and diet once again.

As you recover your doctor may have well found and corrected a malfunctioning insulin pump or located the source of the infection that was a factor in causing your ketoacidosis.

In conclusion ketoacidosis may sound like a walk in the park with the doctor able to control the disease with little to no risk to you and that is true for the majority of people who contract ketoacidosis, but you should be made aware that ketoacidosis may be fatal for a small percentage of people with diabetes who contract the disease.  This pertains mostly to elderly people with diabetes and those with other illnesses that complicate treatment.

The key here is to recognise Ketoacidosis symptoms early and seek treatment quickly, which will give you the best chance of a full recovery.
