Healthy Diabetic SnacksAfter being diagnosed with diabetes it can seem like you can’t enjoy any of the same foods you currently do and have to change your lifestyle completely, making healthy diabetic snacks seem impossible. This can be true in some cases but many people are more than able to enjoy some great snacks while still keeping their blood sugar within a healthy range. In this article we are going to outline some snacking tips and options to help you understand what works and what doesn’t in terms of snacking.

Tips on Healthy Diabetic Snacks

o   Keep your snacks under 150 calories: the problem with snacking between meals is that in many cases your snack can actually turn into a second meal because of the high calorie count you are consuming. It is important to make sure that you are truly hungry and not just eating because you are bored. After you make this distinction you can choose from: peanuts, fruit, yogurt snacks, etc.

o   Beware of Low Fat Snack Options: research and studies have shown that people tend to eat twice as much of a snack when they know it is low in fat because they think they are making a healthy choice. The problem here is that you are consuming too many calories and this low fat snack quickly becomes a problem food.

o   Eat from a Plate: when you lay out your snack in a bowl or a plate you are likely to eat less than if you were to eat directly from the bag where you are guaranteed to eat more! This is where single serving bagged snacks become very handy so you know exactly how many calories you are eating and you are eating snack sized portions without the risk of going overboard.

Healthy Diabetic SnacksWhole grain crackers with a bit of peanut butter on top are a great snack for diabetics. You are taking advantage of the carbohydrates and protein while satisfying your mid-day hunger at the same time. Snacking on raw vegetables is a great option as well. You want to be very careful here when it comes to dipping your veggies in anything because generally this dip completely negates the premise of a low-fat, low calorie snack. If you can eat them raw and plain you are better off.

Small handfuls of dried fruit and peanuts can be a great, healthy diabetic snack option as well. There can be some added sugar in these products so you must do your research beforehand.

There are many healthy diabetic snacks on the market today if you know what to look for and they can be quite tasty!
